Russia
The way of chow-chow breeding in Russia wasn’t easy. After the Great
Patriotic War in USSR (World War II) first black chow-chow female dog
Lotos-U-Pai was imported from Manchuria. She was copulated with black
mail dog of Eskimo dog. Because of good pedigree material absence puppies
from this brood was used for breeding. Then dogs from GDR were appearing
in USSR but they were far from good quality. These dogs had a dry type,
incorrect heads form, incorrect extremities carriage and bad hair. All
this livestock was inbreeded between itself, what was only a securing
of existing drawbacks.
In 1970th years 3 female dogs and 4 mail dogs was imported to USSR from
Germany mainly from Langengrund nursery. The most interesting from them
were mail dog Ben-Kway f. Al-Va-Lju and female dog Ina f. Rainsberg. The
imported dogs were widely used in breeding, giving broods very much different
by quality. Nevertheless, the bringing of new bloods in already strongly
formed population could not update nor qualitatively improve the chow-chow
livestock in the USSR, though there were quite good dogs among the Ben-Kway
f. Al-Va-Lju’s offspring on those times.
Later, in 1976 Igor f. Leimberg was imported from GDR, which gave a good
livestock as a result of close inbreedings on him. Particularly, the copulation
of Igor and Ilka f. Leimberg from the same brood gave Ceis, the first
cimt mail dog, from whom in turn the first blue dog - well-known Go Tsey
Silver Shadow was received. The chow livestock began to stabilize, dogs
with more pedigree heads and strong skeleton, with elements of dampness,
though also far from a world level, began to appear. At the end of 70-th
- the beginning of 80-th years English dog Greatmoor Satan San, a dog
from Holland U-Tvu’s the Quickvitted, a dog from GDR Artos f. House Vollenberg
considerably promoted the improvement of a livestock. From the beginning
of 80-th years in the USSR the new breeding material from Czechoslovakia,
Poland, Germany, Hungary began to appear.
It is necessary to note such dogs as Go Tsey Silver Shadow, Athis of Magnolia,
Don Albrey, Andy Perla Podkorknoshi, Bella Perla Podkorknoshi, Ergika
Shogun, Vesna Dukat Severu, Ksantippa Dukat Severu, Nirong f.d. Mandarin,
Sian-Fu Onsha, Chefu Mumuru, Rubin Chowland, Zochi f. d. Cleinen Pfirshisblutte,
Kastor Ben Ken, Betty z Mikolovskey Yamny, Hagar Labska Chesta, male dog
from Canada Oban's Stirling and others. These sires have brought in the
huge contribution to development of chow-chow breed in Russia, their names
are in many pedigrees of present champions. In the beginning of 90th years
dogs from USA have appeared for the first time in Russia. Especially it
is necessary to mention a dog on nickname Irok’s Bandit becoming the father
of many outstanding dogs, such as Young World champion Monty Makdena,
Ch Rus Sharm Mon Sher. Dog War-Pah's Masterpiece was the ancestor of “Vladlen”
kennel, becoming the father of numerous high quality posterity. Among
his descendants are most known Ch Rus, Fin Nusha Vladlen and Jean Vladlen.
A plenty of high quality chow-chow was brought from the Canadian nursery
" Mi Pao ": Mi Pao’s Red Robin, Mi Pao’s Red Serenity, Mi Pao’s
Midnight Cruising, Mi Pao’s Cream Frosting, Mi Pao’s Cream Applause and
others. Especially it is necessary to mention dog Mi Pao’s Davon Cream
given such high quality dogs, as the Bis Lac Jennifer, Bis Lac Dessa,
Bis Lac Diplomat.
In 90th years export of dogs from Czechia, Hungary, Poland and other European
countries also has proceeded. So, from Sweden were brought Chow Bers Alice
Couper and O’Shimas Ozzy Bear, carrying bloods of world famous English
nurseries " Edlen ", "Ukvong" and "Briarcliffe",
descendant of Ukvong King Solomon. Among the dogs brought from Holland
are most known following dogs Dream Chaser of the Royal Club, father of
such dogs, as Hurakan Marybet Cupidon, Ch Rus Almond Flower Monarch, and
also Ambassador v. x. Venne Dorp, father of such dogs, as Ch Rus Barny,
ChRus Zagadka Vostoka Ninsun. Last years there is an import of dogs from
the best nurseries of the Great Britain, especially it is necessary to
note such chow, as Baytor Black Boris, Towmena Cutty Sark, Dawnanda Distingushed
Don, Baytor Battery Not Included, Kyong Kagny at Fullfodge.
Due to the well thought-out breeding work Russian chow-chows became widely
known on a world scene, here again especially it is necessary to mention
an outstanding dog, World champion Mafusail Insanta, being both an oustanding
show - dog, and the ancestor of the whole galaxy of champions, which are
easy to recognize by type, such as World champion Illarion, Ch Rus Dreik
Bonifacy, Ch Rus Gayer (Illarion x Stefania Vella), Ch Rus Golden Fire
(Illarion x Stefania Vella), Ch Rus Leo San (Dreik Bonifacy x Chia). Due
to efforts of the Russian factory owners, chow-chow breeding in Russia
has came on a world level, the Russian dogs began to win at the largest
exhibitions and successfully to compete on the international rings.
In Ancient China
chow-chow was used as the excellent guard and the hunter, and also as
the shepherd. Now this dog concerns to partners, but it does not mean,
that chow has lost the natural qualities. Chow - is really universal breed.
The ideal partner, chow isperfectly adapted to life both in a city apartment,
and in conditions of the street maintenance. At home chow is practically
imperceptible, he does not stick to owners with games, barks very rarely,
not gnaws footwear and furniture, there is no specific dog smell from
him and, strangely enough, practically there is no wool. Especially pleasant
for the chow maintenance it is his improbable cleanliness - even one month
aged puppies are independently accustomed to make their affairs in strictly
certain place, and the adult dog with the big reluctance will go to walk
to rainy weather and never will step into a dirty nor climb into a puddle.
For to realize natural needs chow-chow hides far in bushes, never daring
to make it on road.
Sentry qualities of chow-chow also do not need to be specially developed,
they are inherent. Puppies start to neatly react on strangers in the age
of one month or even earlier, in contrast to traditional service breeds
at which mistrust to the strangers develops by the age of six months or
one year. The dog without special training does not approach to strangers,
does not take a delicacy from hands of the stranger, thus remaining very
tender and devoted to the members of human "troop".But it is
necessary to note, that chow are mostly a "territorial" dogs,
that protects more the territory, and not the person, though the dogs
becoming excellent bodyguards are known. Practically any representative
of this breed will not let the stranger in an apartment. Chow does not
tolerate nor only familiarities from the stranger, but also simply enhanced
attention to his person, not to mention the master's territory.
Also frequently chow-chow’s pronounced hunting instincts are shown, even
in those conditions when they do not receive due development. So, for
example, practically all chows try "to hunt" on hens in case
of absence of more suitable object, and punishments in this case are useless,
at the first presented opportunity chow will kill the hen, if he’s not
accustomed to domestic animals from puppies age. Cases are known when
chow, raised by the hunter, starts to go on game together with hunting
Eskimo dogs, or even surpassing them in it. Having all remarkable qualities
chow-chow demands the strong handling from the age of puppy, as he is
very inclined to take the authority in his paws. Cases are known when
loving owners, allowing almost all to a charming fur ball, later were
forced to leave a dog becoming uncontrollable. Such owners, who did not
found a contact, often tell tails about chow-chow’s dullness, obstinacy
and disobedientness. All this does not meet the true at all, and the real
chow-chow fans never will exchange them to any other breed. The severe
tone is quite enough for the dog to understand the mistake, but sometimes
there is a necessity for punishment - then it is enough to raise and shake
a dog by withers. The main thing - is to achieve a good execution of commands"
To me! ", "No!" and "Stop!". It is not too difficult,
and other commands can be not necessary. Chow - is one of the cleverest
breeds of dogs, and realizes, what is legal and what is not. There is
an opinion, that dogs of this breed are fully devoted to one owner, however
it is not so - chow will love passionately all members of the family,
in case of good attitude to him, and for dog owners it will be pleasant
to understand, that this majestic animal gives the love only to them,
and that he never will be enticed for sausage or caress. One more ordinary
opinion about chow’s character - that these dogs ostensibly have no sense
of humour and are not able to play. Small puppies play as well as puppies
of any other breed, an adult dog is really not so inclined to games, but
it does not mean, that he’s not able to play in general! In good mood
chow can play out magnificent things! And they have the sense of humour
as well as this concept is applicable to dogs. Chow is remarkable for
constantly good, equal and quiet mood, allowing the owner to whom he trusts
to do anything with himself, and will tolerate any unpleasant procedures.
Chow-chow - the born aristocrat having fine manners. To walk with the
adult chow - is the greatest pleasure! The dog places itself above street
squabbles, not paying attention to bark and sticking of other dogs. And
however they try to start a fight, it is useless - chow does not see and
does not hear them, that even stronger provokes these dogs, like between
people. But chow will not evade from the fight imposed to him, if it will
be necessary. Due to strong jaws and a thick skin chow frequently becomes
the winner of that kind of skirmishes.
Chow can be simultaneously a magnificent guard and fine nanny, to which
even smallest children can be entrusted; wit and kindness, nobleness and
beauty - this combination of qualities invariable conquers people in chow-chow
- a surprising dog with the dark blue tongue, proud gait and appearance
of a bear.
Character of chow-chow was perfectly described in the book “Human finds
the friend”" by the remarkable scientist, writer Konrad Lorents,
devoted his life to chow-chow breeding. All who wish to get a dog of this
breed or already having it this book might be very interesting.
